Material Sourcing
Natural Material Sourcing Guide: from latex to silk
Natural materials are the root of a luxury mattress's feel and premium. This article compares four core natural materials — latex, wool, silk and coir — with practical advice on supplier screening and sourcing execution.
1. Why natural matters
Natural materials offer breathability, skin-friendliness and an eco narrative that synthetics can hardly replace — the key for premium brands to differentiate from competitors.
- Natural latex: great rebound & breathability, naturally anti-bacterial.
- Wool: temperature & humidity balancing, naturally flame-retardant.
- Silk: skin-friendly luxury, used as light accent.
- Coir: eco support, glue-free hot-press is better.
2. Four materials compared
Natural content, origin and certification are the three leverage points for screening. Latex → GOLS & natural content; cotton/wool/silk → GOTS; coir → FSC.
| Material | Core cert | Sourcing note |
|---|---|---|
| Natural latex | GOLS | D-density 85–90, natural content ≥ 95% |
| Organic cotton | GOTS | Long-staple, Tencel blend, skin-friendly |
| Wool | RWS | Temperature/humidity balancing, natural FR |
| Coir | FSC | 3D eco, glue-free hot-press |
